Greetings all you lighting enthusiasts! Iím Annie at Pegasus Lighting, and Iím going to share with you some basics about LEDs.
Using these little lights, also known as light emitting diodes can give you countless benefits. Theyíre long lasting, dimmable, and energy efficient.
LEDs come in a vast array of colors, like green, blue, red, and amber. To create the in-demand white LED, a blue LED is simply covered with a yellow phosphorous coating OR three different colored LEDs are placed in cozy proximity.
A single LED produces just 80 lumens of light, less than one tenth of the output of a 60-watt incandescent, which is why LED fixtures must contain groups of LEDs.
The color temperature of LEDs varies, but a white LEDís color temperature can be as warm as 2,600K with a CRI (or color rendering index) of 80 out of 100. This means they can portray colors quite accurately.
The typical LED has a rated life of up to 60,000 hours, which is about 23 years! They also produce more lumens per watt than almost any other light source.
When purchasing an LED fixture, you may also need to get a driver, an electronic power source that converts line power to the appropriate voltage so your LED can function properly. They may also include dimming and other color correction controls.
