About our 500-Watt 12 and 24-Volt Magnetic Low Voltage Transformer
Description

This 500-watt low voltage magnetic transformer will power your 12 or 24-volt halogen or xenon lighting systems. When powering 12-volt systems, this is a 2-circuit transformer. When powering 24-volt systems, this is a 1-circuit transformer. All electrical connections can be conveniently stored in the included metal enclosure.

  • Uses: may be used to power 12-volt or 24-volt halogen or 12V or 24V xenon lighting systems.
  • Designed for Two 12-Volt Circuits: when this magnetic transformer is powering 12-volt lighting systems, it is a 2-circuit transformer with a maximum load of 200 watts per circuit
  • Designed for One 24-Volt Circuit: when this magnetic transformer is powering 24-volt lighting systems, it is a 1-circuit transformer with a maximum load of 400 watts
  • Maximum Load: 400 watts maximum of lighting load for 24-volt systems and 200 watts maximum of lighting load per circuit for 12-volt systems. Like most magnetic transformers, these transformers should be used to power about 80% of their wattage rating. [Caution: Always attach the load to the transformer before connecting the transformer to power.]
  • Input: 120 volts AC, 60 Hz, 4.2 amps
  • Input Leads: 6-inch 18 AWG wires
  • Output: 11.5 volts AC or 23 volts AC
  • Output Leads: 6-inch 12 AWG wires [Suggestion: Use a terminal block for each connection in the 12V output circuit and make certain that these connections are very tight and secure. Also, be sure that the gauge of the electrical wire used in the output circuit is not less than 12 AWG.]
  • Installation: the transformer and all of the hardwired electrical splices (connections) can be conveniently stored in the included metal enclosure
  • Metal Enclosure: easy opening case with knock-outs for hardwiring. Powder coated textured paint finish.
  • Power Cord Available: 8-foot power cord with 3-prong plug and cable connector is available for converting this transformer to a plug-in model.
  • Case Size: 7.0in(H) x 4.75in(W) x 4.35in(L)
  • Weight: 12 lbs
  • Dimmable: fully dimmable using a dimmer designed for a magnetic transformer. [Caution: dimmer should always be connected to the input side, 120V side, of a transformer.]
  • Thermal Shutdown Protection: yes with manual reset circuit breaker
  • 10 Year Warranty: this transformer carries a 10-year warranty
  • Color: black

Is this a toroidal transformer? Is it safe to use to power an indoor system with exposed wires that power the halogen lights? (The wires hang from my ceiling, 7 ft above the floor). How noisy is this unit?
By Jacob from Pegasus Lighting on May 24, 2013

Answer:
Dave,

No, it's not a toroidal magnetic.

It is designed to power low voltage halogen systems. I would strongly suggest consulting an electrician to make sure you are meeting all local codes if you have exposed wire hanging from your ceiling.

One of the disadvantages of magnetic transformers is that they do make some humming noise. Electronic transformers are much quieter and if your wattage load is 300W or less, then I would suggest using an electronic transformer.
