How are these lights mounted to the side(s) of the headboard? Thanks.

There is a bracket that slides behind the bed and would then screws into the back of the headboard. The screws are included.

How thick does the headboard need to be to accommodate the screws?
By James from Rockville, MD on March 30, 2014
Answer:Minimum 1/2"; but...the screws that came with the mount were too small to really hold the headboard mount securely, i.e. it started loosening after only a few nights of moving the gooseneck around to an optimum position. My wife and I both like to push it back out of the way when we finish reading. I replaced the furnished screws with a larger version and security of the mount has not been an issue.

Answer:Ideally 1/4". You can probably get away with 3/16". Any thinner than that you should use a small anchor bolt.

Could it be mounted to the wall or does the mounting bracket only face the headboard? Also how wide is the mounting bracket?

That light is designed to mount to the back of the headboard. You could turn it around and mount it on a wall, but you would need a spacer for the bracket as it is notched out to fit around the edge of the head board.
The bracket is about 6 inches in length and the notched section is about 2-3/4 inches. The diameter is about 1/2 inch.
I personally would suggest this item instead for a wall mount reading light - http://www.pegasuslighting.com/led-reading-light-gooseneck-arm-push-switch-3w.html
