Perfect solution!
May 13, 2015
We installed these as deck stair lights and also for our outdoor wheelchair lift. I'm including a picture of the lift with the lights. They worked all winter on the original batteries and brutal Chicago winter. I used to be afraid someone would walk off the end of our deck, but mounting one of these on the top railing post illuminates the stairs clearly. I plan to buy more this summer for the back door.

Absolutely SURPASSES Expectations ~ EXCELLENT PRODUCT! 100% Recommended
December 19, 2013
We had a bad fall from an owner within our building so looking for a no fuss, attractive, automatic light that would illuminate the stairs which were very hard to see at night. I stumbled upon these lights and since they appeared to be such an inexpensive option, it seemed worthwhile to at least give them a go since no wiring was needed. We live in a very harsh environment right on the coast on a barrier island, subject to storms, intense sun, wind, driving rain, not to mention salt air corrosion potential. So these lights were going to get the full test on ALL fronts. I was pleasantly surprised at just how nice they looked in the bronze finish. You could not immediately tell they were plastic. They appeared very well-made, especially considering the cost. I bought TWO lights and it only took me about 30 minutes to install them alongside our stairs. One thing I recommend highly, is to coat that battery compartment for the C Batteries with WD-40 or some other corrosion protector. I just sprayed all the metal contacts as well as the batteries with WD-40 on install. Well, it's been OVER ONE YEAR and these lights have been ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! They have survived a coastal winter, a raging hot and humid summer, and another fall. We've had torrential downpours, winds in up to 60mph, and all sorts of conditions. Amazingly, these great lights have not skipped a single beat! They come on exactly at the right time, when lights are needed, and go off when it's light out. As soon as it detects motion, the light does great work putting a nice glow on the stairs. I can't tell you how happy I am with this solution. Not only that, but we have had numerous people comment on them, asking where they were purchased. And they look as good today as they did when I installed them. But I've saved one of the best things for last. YES, THEY ARE ON THE ORIGINAL SET OF BATTERIES I put in when they were installed! We are OVER 14 months and counting now on ONE SET OF C Batteries! I'm convinced the WD-40 of the parts also helped here. I can't recommend these lights any more enthusiastically. Definitely going to get some more! Thanks for an all too rare product that actually EXCEEDS expectations on all levels. Well-Done.

So far, so good.
June 24, 2013
I pretty rarely do reviews but I just noticed these things out on my patio just doing there job as intended and so I felt I'd leave a note. They aren't the brightest in the world but do provide a little bit of ambient light and/or safety lighting...they're great. So far the initial 3 C batteries in any of my 4 units have not died after a few months so battery life seems solid. They've also been subject to some ridiculous heavy rain and have had no issues. I used scotch tape extreme grip outdoor (or something like that) double-sided tape to post them to the wall outside.
Battery Life, Good Looking, Easy to Use
A bit of a cheap and finnicky product, not exactly the brightest lights in the world

Better than expected

Great lights. We put them on a back patio area that we need lit only when coming in and out of the gate. These were a cinch to install. The whole transaction from the ordering to the delivery was perfect -- great communication and fast shipping. Very pleased.
Exactly as described

These are great lights. Easy to install and batteries have lasted longer than I expected. Going on 8 months on original battery. I used these because solar wouldn't work in the area.
Look great easy install

Very Good Lights!
December 13, 2014
We purchased these lights to replace one that had been stolen from our mailbox. The lights offer a bright illumination when someone walks or drives by the mailbox and dims down to provide a nice security light when no one is in the area. We liked them so much that we've purchased additional lights to place along the path to our front porch. This is a very good product that is offered at a very good price.
It would be great if there was a means of screwing the back onto the wood to make it more secure.

Best Yet!

Purchased several different sets of battery operated outdoor weather resistant LED lights. After testing them for 2 weeks this set of lights came out on top by far in all areas. Such as brightness, quality, all of them worked, and length of time each light stayed on. In fact I've had them on in a dark room for 2 weeks and they are still going strong! The rest have already used up there batteries. I now feel confident putting them outside. Their brightness and consistence should keep my family safe on our outdoor steps. I will be purchasing more for my parent's steps to install at their home for the holidays. Will make a great gift.

Great light!
August 11, 2014
From reading other reviews, I was concerned about the brightness as I needed to put in 6 areas where my deck has different levels (including three sets of stairs with 4 steps). I didn't want to spend a lot of money putting in low-voltage lighting because of the cost, time, and work it would incur crawling around under the huge deck and making permanent cuts into the wood/decking. These work perfectly - the night light provides the perfect amount of light to show those areas, and the motion-sensor bright light covers a great distance and turns the 'bright' light on well in advance of anyone approaching a step (or steps). The light is certainly bright enough to cover the steps and has really helped. I can't comment on the battery life, but I am thoroughly satisfied with the lights. Per a previous review and accompanying picture, the key is to place the lights about 2-3 feet over the steps - I placed mine on posts. Can't comment on the battery life yet.
Good light and great motion sensor.
Perhaps a little too deep - but that has to happen with 3 C-cell batteries per light.

Questions & Answers
By kls96 from PA on September 4, 2013
How much area does the emitted light cover? That is, if I have a set of steps that is 6-8 ft wide, would I need a light on both sides of the steps or would one be sufficient to light the full width?
By Keith from NYC on September 4, 2013

Well, first of all, the strong light is emitted from the bottom of it, not the four white ovals (although they do emit light it's a bit dimmer than the LED on the bottom). So ideally these things should get mounted on the railing, or the light won't spread much.

In general, it's a pretty strong light though, I think one placed 3-4 feet above the level of the step would be easily enough to light the step such that people can use it. However, you're definitely going to have uneven light (aka stronger on one side) as far as appearance goes.

If it's any consolation, I've been really happy with this product. I use 4 of them to light my whole terrace actually. Mounted about 5.5 feet high they do a decent job of providing a good bit of ambient light to my 23x13 terrace in NYC.

Whilst it doesn't do it perfect justice, I've attached an image of my deck with how I'm using them. Maybe it will help.

I have over twenty of these lights installed at various locations around and under an elevated water front home. They work extremely well for my purposes. To your question.....I have my stair lights on a four foot wide stair and they are sufficient. However if you are leaving a lighted area you may find them dimmer than you would like until your eyes adjust to the darkness. Upon returning they always appear much brighter. I would recommend one on either side of an eight foot wide stair and placed no more than every five treads. Hope this helps.

Would these work for metal stairs?

By Karen from Oregon on November 2, 2014

I bought two of these to mount on my wood stair rails. They mount easily with two screws. The light is sufficient to light up the stairs when you come home and it's dark. The motion sensor is angled correctly enough that it senses movement at the base of the stairs. The light itself is not very heavy and perhaps could be mounted using double-sided sticky tape or something similar. I have had these for over year and I'm still on the same set of batteries. I have been very happy with this purchase.

You would need to use self tapping screws instead of what is provided. I love these lights
By BE from Kenosha, WI on November 2, 2014

I don't know about steel - if you're asking about mounting on steel (I'd be concerned about the residual aesthetics with drilling), but the tape should work as the lights aren't not that heavy.

I have 7 of them mounted on my composite deck. A single light covers each of my 3 sets of stairs (4 risers about 3' wide). The lights are at their brightest setting and do a great job of illuminating the entire area. The night light is really awesome as it gives guests an awareness that a step(s) is coming and the motion sensor gives plenty of time to illuminate the entire area.

I had considered paying a fortune for wired and embedded LED lights before I got these. This is one of the best purchases I've ever made.

These have to be attached by drilling the base into the stair so as long as you can do that it will work . These are GREAT lights- you can adjust lighting level & they also can stay dim then get brighter when they sense movement. I looked everywhere for similar lighting and these are the best I have found.

You will need to figure out a way to mount the housing. I mounted mine on the side of my house.
