What are the tabs that are located on the metal shade that holds the halogen lamp? I presume they may be something to move the shade, since the shade may be hot.

Rebecca, yes that's correct. It's to adjust the shade position.

The description says the on/off switches are "on the canopy." What is the canopy? We think or would like to think the canopy is the thing that hangs down over the headboard that holds the bulb, but the terminology isn't completely clear to us. Thank you.

The canopy is the middle section where the plug comes into the fixture. If the plug is coming out the bottom and you are looking at the fixture, there are two silver toggle switches on the left and right side towards the bottom of the canopy. You can kinda see them in the web pictures, but you have to have to know what you are looking for.
