OUR COMPANY

Pegasus Lighting is an e-commerce website that sells unique lighting products to a wide spectrum of customers in a friendly, helpful, efficient, and enlightening manner. We strive to blend technology with the personal touch of outstanding customer service and an information-rich website.

Begun in 1993, Pegasus Lighting is a division of Edison Lighting Systems, Inc., which, in turn, has been in business since 1987. Pegasus Lighting is a member of the Better Business Bureau (www.BBB.org) and provides its e-commerce customers with a secure website through Yahoo Merchant Services. The Pittsburgh Business Times identified Pegasus Lighting as one of the top 100 Fastest-Growing, Privately-Held Companies in the Pittsburgh area in 2007 and again in 2008.

OUR FOUNDER

Tom Farin, Founder of Pegasus LightingThomas E. Farin is the founder of Pegasus Lighting and Edison Lighting Systems, Inc. He has been in the field of lighting since 1987 and has extensive training and experience in lighting, physics, mathematics and education, acquired at the undergraduate, Masterís, and Doctoral levels, and in the field. It is Dr. Farin's interest and expertise in education that has driven the overall design of the Pegasus Lighting site - with its heavy emphasis on lighting terminology, lighting techniques, and thorough information about each lighting product. It is hoped that each visitor to the site, regardless of his or her knowledge of lighting, will find the information provided to be extremely beneficial and that he/she will become a well-informed consumer and user of lighting products. Dr. Farin has been an active member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (www.IESNA.org) since 1993, and is a Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional with the Association of Energy Engineers (www.AEECenter.org) and a Surveyor Ally with the EPA Green Lights Program (www.EnergyStar.gov). In February 2010, Dr. Farin was honored by Triangle Business Leader magazine as one of the Top 50 Entrepreneurs for 2010 in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. What We Consider to be a Unique Lighting Product

We consider a lighting product to be unique or, at least, somewhat unique if it is difficult to find, is contemporary or avant-garde in styling, is unusual in some fashion, uses a state-of-the-art light source or optical design, is custom-made, or is energy-efficient. Therefore, for example, we prefer to offer our customers lighting products that use LED, fluorescent, halogen, or xenon light bulbs instead of traditional incandescent light bulbs and we prefer to offer our customers fluorescent lighting products that use quiet, energy-efficient electronic ballasts instead of magnetic ballasts.

 

DimmableA) Dimmable  Any product that is designated as "Dimmable" can be dimmed if the correct dimming device is used. Any product that does not have this designation is not dimmable. A lighting product that does not use a transformer should use a line voltage dimmer, a lighting product that uses an electronic transformer should use a dimmer designed for an electronic transformer, a lighting product that uses a magnetic transformer should use a dimmer designed for a magnetic transformer, and a lighting product that plugs into a receptacle (outlet) should use an Attache®, Credenza®, or Spacer System™ dimmer by Lutron. Please consult the Dimmers section of our website to find the right dimmer for lighting product.

 

Installation DifficultyB) Installation Difficulty  We rank the ease of installing our lighting products from 1 "wrench" (very easy) to 5 "wrenches" (will take some time or patience or professional expertise). We tend to be a bit conservative with our estimates of difficulty so that you will not be disappointed with the time that it takes to install a given lighting product. That is, we would rather judge a product to be a little more difficult to install than you might find it to be than vice versa.

THE STORY OF PEGASUS

In Greek mythology Pegasus was a beautiful, white, winged horse. He sprang from Medusa's body when her head was chopped off by the Greek hero, Perseus. Medusa was a Greek villain who had snakes as hair. Without a mother, Pegasus roamed free and wild.

 

While Pegasus was drinking from a well, Bellerophon managed to slip a golden bridle over Pegasus and capture the winged horse. The golden bridle had been a gift from Athena, the favorite daughter of Zeus and the Goddess of Wisdom. Bellerophon tamed Pegasus and used the horse during his adventures. One of these adventures was the slaying of Chimera. Chimera had the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a snake. It killed and ate humans. Many brave men had tried slaying Chimera on foot without any luck. Bellerophon used Pegasus to fly to the monster and kill it.

 

Bellerophon made the foolish decision to try and fly Pegasus to Mount Olympus (heaven, according Greek mythology). Zeus, king of the Greek gods, quickly put a stop to Bellerophon by throwing him from Pegasus. Bellerophon survived the fall, but he was crippled. As for Pegasus, he made it into heaven where he spent his days carrying lightning bolts for Zeus. When the stars are out, you might be able to see the Pegasus constellation, which was named after him.
